Winter League final
Published December 2018

Over the last two months, Newry Tennis Club has held their annual League competition involving over 50 people keen to get some exercise over the cold winter nights. There were six teams who played each other on a weekly round robin basis. It was an exciting competition that came down to the final week when the Alpha Males of Shane McAteer beat their nearest rivals, Marty Keenan's Team Sigma.
Team winners
Shane McAteer
Malachy McAteer Senior
Russell Shields Patterson
Diarmuid Lonergan
Garreth Keenan
Sean Taheny
and sub Daniel Boyd
Men's Singles
Shane McAteer continued his dominance of the local tennis singles scene as he remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and did not drop a set at all. Special mention to Marty Keenan for a tremendous event finishing second overall. It was a closely fought contest for the best in the second singles rubber matches. The winner here was Malachy McAteer Junior just ahead of Gary Hanratty and Cormac Moody.
Men's Doubles
Russell Shields-Patterson won his first event as he remained unbeaten in 8 matches over the two months. His wins came alongside Malachy McAteer Snr, Sean Taheny and Daniel Boyd.
Mixed Doubles
Both June McEvoy and Gary Smith were unbeaten throughout the tournament due to great net play and court coverage.
A huge thank you to Tim Smith for organising the event.
