Rostrevor Open 2018

The beautiful setting of Kilbroney played host to a great level of success for Newry players at the 2018 Rostrevor Open. First of all Shane McAteer reached all three finals, winning both Men's Doubles with Derek Laverty and Mixed Doubles with Deirdre Dinsmore which are great achievements. The Mixed was won the hard way as he and Deirdre showed huge fortitude in a three hour final winning 10-8 in a full game play set. He also reached the final of the Men's Singles with a fighting 26 61 61 win over our very own Tim Smith and then lost to Ardgal McMahon 61 63 who is ranked in the English University scene.

In the Kilbroney  Cup Malachy McAteer Senior produced a fantastic comeback and won his first singles tournament to mean all three of the McAteers have now won this event. He beat tournament organiser Chris Gibbons 46 63 10-8. In the Champions tie break he won from 5-8 down to clinch five points in a row.

Brian O'Hare outlasted his brother James on a tough three set match 36 64 64. James had his chances in the second set as he had a point for 5-5 all but it wasn't to be and Brian came to the net more to end the points quicker.

Malachy McAteer Senior and Junior joined together to win the Men's Doubles plate beating James O'Hare and Neil McMahon in the final. So an all Newry final.

Well done to all. Congrats to Chris Gibbons for organising and our own Tommy McKeown for umpiring.
