There was a tremendous first round battle between Michael McKnight and newcomer Brian O'Hare. Both produced a huge amount of variety with deft touch, high lobs and competitive points. Newry's answer to Wawrinka v Federer as they both have stylish single handed backhands. It would become an endurance test as there were numerous twenty plus stroke rallys. Brian edged the first set 6-4. The second would last for an eternity as neither would give way. Michael led 3-0 and 5-4 but Brian pegged him back to equilibrium. Michael had chances at 6-5 but it was the tiebreak were the match came into its own. Either player could have won with numerous set points and match points asunder. Michael had a great chance with a searing shot to the baseline but Brian managed to get a racquet on to it from beside the back fence and produce an amazing winning lob. In a display of wonderful sportsmanship both players were assisting the other on line calls. At 17-15 Brian finally won as both had been through an almighty test.
The O'Hare brothers have made an immediate impact on the club and tournament as it would this time be James who would be involved in a dramatic tiebreak. Against the Ironman marathon runner Malachy McAteer Snr they would play two matches in a row. The doubles went the way of experienced Sean and Mal against debutants Brian & James. Mal has a marathon best of 2 hours 50 minutes and it shows as he gets to every ball and it is like playing against a wall. James tried to mix it up and won set one 6-4 but fitness was beginning to tell. The second set to Mal 6-2. Both decided to have a champions tie break first to ten points and most of the rallies were outstanding. Mal opened up a 6-1 lead before James equalised at 6-6. James attempted to end the points quicker and missed a volley wide at the net giving the impetus to Malachy for victory.
Thursday night witnessed significant progress in the Men's Singles tournament. Shane McAteer opened his account showing no mercy to his own dad beating him by a double bagel score. He has achieved a 6-0  6-0 scoreline in his last four Newry events. There was also progress for No3 seed Rory McGeown making his Newry Closed debut with a 2 and 1 win over Michael Sands and No4 Marty Keenan also won comfortably against Garreth Keenan. Cormac Moody produced his first main draw singles win as he beat new member Patrick McMahon fresh from winning Warrenpoint Doubles Plate. The highlight of the night was a classic encounter between No6 seed Ronnie Dalzell and the energetic Gary Hanratty. Ronnie used his steady all round game to keep Gary at bay with an easy 60 first set. Gary then stopped going for the massive shots and the rallies became endurance tests as neither would give way. Ronnie had chances at 5-4 before Gary turned the fortunes round for 6-5 but it was destined for a long tiebreak. With a packed bus watching it was decided who would go for a little bit more than the other Ronnie held two match points at 6-4 but Gary saved one with a running passing shot down the line.. Then Gary had a set point of his own with Ronnie hitting a heavy topspin plum on the baseline to save it and then finally won through late into the evening.
