Newry 2018 Closed begins

It has been a bright start to the 2018 Newry Closed. On Sat 21 April we had an exhilarating opening as Alex Staselovich  and Matthew Richmond came back from a 4-0 40-0 deficit to upend many club mmebers tip for the title Gerry Sweetman and Matthew Pearse to win 67 64 64. In singles Michael McKnight also fought back from arrears as he went 0-3 down against debutant youngster Sean Taheny but two hours 45 minutes later he escaped with a win in an engaging encounter in which both can hold their heads high. Well done Michael and we shall much more of Sean in years to come.

Day 2

Two friendly foes rekindled their tennis history as the Plate finalists from last year met in round 1. Nigel was far more consistent in the first set  but as the crowds gathered Gary Hanratty got his famous fist pump going and was rallying to equalise the score. Nigel outlasted Gary in an enjoyable third set so Gary can continue in his King of the Plate quest and Nigel will not be there to thwart him. Gary Smith recorded an efficient win over John Woods and showing his keenness went straight into his doubles which witnessed Kieran Campbell and James O'Hare in devastating form.

Day 3

The O'Hare brothers continue to impress with a stylish victory over stalwarts Pat O'Neill and Michael McKnight. The match of the night was undoubtedly Malachy McAteer Junior and Tommy McKeown coming back from a set down to take out regular champ Tim Smith with John Woods. Three hours later Mal and Tommy had their victory. Orla was an avid spectator with Sam the sparkling Collie brightening up my night.

Day 4

A heavy shower soon washed away and we had two matches played with an emphatic singles win for Andrew and a doubles triumph for Alex and Malachy Senior.
